4K TV upgrade – Your Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic TVs are about to look very outdated

If you’re looking to upgrade your ageing television then there’s plenty to look forward to in 2020. All of the world’s biggest tech firms are launching new TVs with each offering improved picture quality, better audio and more features.

The latest range of tellies were revealed at the CES technology show in Las Vegas earlier this month and express.co.uk made the trek to Sin City to check out what’s coming to your living room this year.

So, if you are looking for an upgrade, here’s what will be launching from Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic in 2020.

SAMSUNG PUSHES THINGS TO THE EDGE

definitely stole the show at CES this year with its stunning 8K telly feature an almost bezel-free screen.

The new Q950TS pushes the screen to new limits with just a tiny 2.3-millimetre bezel

It’s not just on the outside where things look seriously impressive as Samsung has also included the very latest 8K technology which produces a picture that packs four times the resolution of current 4K sets.

As screens get bigger it’s becoming more important to pack more pixels into the display if you want the ultimate viewing experience.

Obviously, there’s currently no 8K content being beamed into homes by broadcasters but this new telly uses clever AI-powered upscaling technology to make anything you watch appear almost as if it’s been filmed in this sensational format.

Of course, native 8K content will always look better, but this is a nice answer for the complete lack of 8K broadcasts and streams at the moment.

Another nice feature is an adaptive picture setting which is able to automatically adjust the brightness and contrast based on the TV’s surroundings. This is similar to what many smartphones and tablets now offer and should make viewing endless boxsets and blockbuster movies little easier on the eyes.

Other additions to this new TV include some pretty impressive speakers which are able to magically move the audio around the screen meaning you get an almost surround sound experience without needing to buy any additional equipment.

You’ll also find in-built support for smart assistants such as Bixby and Amazon’s Alexa.

There’s no word on price or a release date just yet but don’t expect this new telly to be cheap.

Sony 8K TV

SONY BRINGS BETTER QUALITY TO SMALLER SCREENS

which are aimed at suiting all living rooms and wallets.

It’s most premium TV, the ZH8, will arrive later this year and offer telly addicts either an 85-inch or 75-inch 8K screen to watch their flx of boxsets on.

As well as looking impressive the ZH8 should sound pretty good as well. That’s due to its Frame Tweeter technology which is tucked inside and magically vibrates the frame of the TV to emit sound, giving customers the feeling that audio is coming directly from the screen.

This is Sony’s flagship TV so don’t expect a bargain but don’t panic if you were hoping for something a little cheaper. The Japanese firm hasn’t forgotten those who might want something that doesn’t require a footballer’s salary or mansion.

During CES the new A9 was announced which is the first time Sony has added a 48-inch OLED screen to its range. This, it says, is to meet consumer demand for smaller, premium quality OLED TVs.

The A9 has also been designed to be more adaptable with its small and central aluminium stand providing users with flexibility in smaller spaces.

Along with the premium picture quality and smaller size, this TV gets Sony’s clever Acoustic Surface Audio for immersive sound and there’s the new Ambient Optimization which optimises picture and sound quality in any customer environment.

If any of these televisions have got you excited the pricing and retail availability will be announced later in the year.

PANASONIC OFFERS THE ULTIMATE CINEMA EXPERIENCE

Movie buffs are in for a treat later this year with which looks set to offer the ultimate cinema experience in your home. The all-new HZ2000, which will hit stores in the summer, is the world’s first OLED TV to support both Dolby Vision IQ and Filmmaker Mode in addition to Dolby Vision, HDR10+.

All of this technology should help to make everything you watch appear just as it was meant to be seen by the creator – it’s even been tuned by Hollywood’s leading colourist Stefan Sonnenfeld.

When activated, Filmmaker Mode respects the frame rate, aspect ratio, colour and contrast of the content whilst also turning off noise reduction and sharpening.

The mode is even supported by top Hollywood directors, including Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Patty Jenkins, Ryan Coogler, and Paul Thomas Anderson.

The inclusion of Dolby Vision IQ also extends the benefits of Dolby Vision beyond HDR by intelligently optimising picture quality experiences for viewers regardless of ambient light or content type – all without consumers picking up their remote.

Along with that stunning picture you’ll also find innovative built-in upward-firing speakers capable of delivering Dolby Atmos and surround sound without needing a dedicated audio system. This clever system was introduced by Panasonic last year and has to be heard to be believed with audio appearing to hit your ears from all directions.

There’s no word on price or release date with Panasonic only confirming it will be available in summer 2020.

LG 8K TV

LG HAS PLENTY TO CHOOSE FROM

Last year it was all about LG’s rollable TV but in 2020 the Korean firm is going back to basics. During CES they announced 14 new standard television including flagship 8K NanoCell models which use clever artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithms to improve the picture quality.

LG says its 2020 OLED ZX Real 8K models, will deliver four times more detail than 4K TV and 16 times more than HDTV.

Along with 8K, there’s also three new art-inspired GX Gallery series 4K Ultra HD TVs.

The GX Gallery series 4K UHD models join the LG OLED WX Wallpaper series (razor-thin 77- and 65-inch models) and the LG SIGNATURE OLED R (model 65RX) to provide genuine space integration and an element of futuristic luxury, regardless of whether they’re turned on.

Finally, there’s new versions of the two popular 4K UHD series (models CX, BX) in 77-, 65- and 55-inch class sizes and LG is also bringing the improved picture quality to an all-new screen size – 48-inch. This 4K UHD unit (model OLED48CX) reproduces even sharper picture quality with 8 million-plus pixels on the 48-inch screen, density comparable to that of a 96-inch 8K TV.

Again, there’s no word on price with LG expected to announce more in the coming months.
