Galaxy S10 could look radically different to any other Samsung smartphone

Galaxy S10 is the presumed name given to the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus’ successor.

The hardware has been heavily rumoured to come in three different models with one variant being more affordable.

However, to achieve its lower price tag, such a device is expected to forgo some premium features.

A recent report from Bloomberg insisted the “standard” Galaxy S10 will arrive with a curved OLED screen and a fingerprint reader placed under its display.

But the outlet admitted the cheaper version of the S10 will not come with Samsung’s signature curved panel.

And it declared the device may not feature an in-display fingerprint reader, suggesting the South Korean tech giant could place it on the back of the device, as is the case on its current flagships.

Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, also emphasised Samsung will follow tradition by releasing a Plus version of the Galaxy S10 in addition to the standard model.

The S10 was claimed to come with a triple-camera system that could launch a radical challenge to Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro devices.

Samsung was also said to be “toying” with a version of the Galaxy S10 “without a headphone jack”.

If such a rumour is true, it could prove to be incredibly divisive amongst Samsung fans that are not fully invested in Bluetooth technology yet.

And it appears the Galaxy S10 could take on another controversial design choice.

During its developer conference in San Francisco last night, the South Korean firm showed off four new displays that are expected to arrive in its future smartphones.

The first three, dubbed Infinity U, Infinity V and Infinity O, all feature a noticeable notch in some form.

Infinity U features a half-oval cutout similar to that seen on the Essential Phone.

Meanwhile, the Infinity V technology looks similar to the U, but has sharper edges overall.

Lastly, the Infinity O panel has a circular cutout that sits on its own, meaning it does not bleed into a traditional bezel.

Samsung also showed off a display called New Infinity that appeared to be free of a notch, meaning if it was placed on a phone the entire front would be a screen with no bezels at all.

The four technologies were shown on a slide during Samsung’s developer conference last night.

While many smartphone manufacturers have implemented cutouts into their designs, Samsung has so far steered clear of such a choice.

However, with three of its four new panels boasting a notch, it seems as though future phones from the firm will have the controversial design choice.

And if the Galaxy S10 comes with either a Infinity U, V or O screen, it would mark the first flagship from the South Korean company to have a cutout.

That means, until panels with no bezels become more prominent, the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 could be the firm’s last top-tier products without a notch.

However, no details about the Galaxy S10’s screen have been confirmed by Samsung.

But the company is expected to show off the product at the start of next year, meaning fans will not have to wait long to see what is in store.
