Just arrived: 2019 Nissan Altima

The all-new Altima takes its inspiration from the award-winning Nissan Vmotion 2.0 concept, which debuted at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Like the show car, the production Altima attracts immediate attention with its athletic stance and proportions – lower, wider and more dynamic than previous generations, thanks in part to new platform packaging and the use of two new low-profile engine designs.

Powertrain: 2.5-liter inline-four with 188 hp and 180 pound-feet of torque; 2.0-liter variable-compression four-cylinder engine with 248 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque

Technology: Standard 8-inch color display with multitouch control, available door-to-door navigation with real-time traffic information, available NissanConnect system powered by SiriusXM, standard Siri Eyes Free voice recognition, hands-free text messaging, available Intelligent Around View Monitor

Safety: ProPilot Assist comes standard on the SV, SL and Platinum trims; also included are rear automatic braking, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, radar-based blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and a new traffic-sign recognition system for speed-limit detection

Competitors: Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata

Strengths: The redesign gives the Altima a more sophisticated look, with a 1-inch height reduction that translates to a more grounded stance. The deep plunging V-motion grille adds a luxurious feel to the front end. But above it all is the satisfying feel of two new engines — even the base engine — coupled with a smoother and quieter ride.

Weaknesses: All-wheel drive is available only with the 2.5-liter base engine. And despite the hoopla over advanced new safety features, such as ProPilot Assist, the value is not immediately clear.

Bottom line: Nissan’s sixth-generation redesign has elevated the ride, handling, comfort, technology, appearance and interior ambiance of its biggest-volume sedan as it bids for a resurgence in the car segment.
