CHECK YOUR ROUTER

It’s probably one of the easiest things to change but moving your router could help boost the connection around your home.

Sky says that if it’s tucked away in a cupboard or surrounded by clutter it can block your hub’s signal or cause interference.

For the clearest signal keep it out in the open – not in a cabinet, on the floor or stuck behind the TV. In fact, about 30cm of space around it is best.

It’s also a good idea to keep it away from other wireless devices like your cordless phone, games consoles and even speakers – these can cause interference.

One final router tip is to try put it where you use the internet most – the signal is always stronger near your hub.

CHECK WHAT’S CONNECTED TO YOUR ROUTER

The more things you have connected to the web, the slower things can get.

As Sky explains, everything you connect to your hub uses bandwidth, and the more you connect the more it can slow you down (especially at peak times).

Even when you aren’t using them, app updates, device backups and your smart home devices can still be using your bandwidth in the background.

If you’re suffering from slow speeds try disconnecting any gadgets that don’t need to be online.

A good thing to note for those working from home is to stop other members of your household from downloading large files, such as games, during the day as this can bring things to a shuddering halt just as you are about to start that video call with your boss.

Another top tip for those who have no idea how many devices are connected is to reset the Wi-Fi password. This will then allow you to reconnect only the gadgets you really need.
