A midcentury-modern home in Oakland, a 1916 former gardener’s cottage with a conservatory in Lake Forest and a Charles Moore house near Watch Hill.

Oakland, Calif. | $1.395 Million

A midcentury-modern house in the Oakland Hills, with six bedrooms, three bathrooms and San Francisco Bay views

Designed by Norris Gaddis, the architect of the Oakland Zoo, this house is on the Piedmont side of the Montclair neighborhood in Oakland. It is on the market for the first time since it was completed in 1962.

Size: 3,367 square feet

Price per square foot: $414

Indoors: This redwood-sided house is approached by way of a small wooden bridge over a dry, moat-like feature. The foyer, with its original terrazzo floors, leads to a living room with a double-height ceiling and a dramatic redwood fireplace wall with a terrazzo hearth and a large black metal hood. A wall of glass looks out to a wraparound deck and the San Francisco Bay. Shoji screens can be pulled along a track to separate the living room from the dining area.

The kitchen flows into a double-height family room with a breakfast bar, eating area, work space and extensive built-in cabinets. Upstairs is a master suite that includes a dressing room, private bathroom and second room that could be used as a study. Downstairs, on the middle level, are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The lower level has another two bedrooms and a bathroom, as well as a rumpus room with a cinder-block fireplace wall. A deck runs along the length of this level.

Outdoor space: The 0.22-acre property includes a fenced backyard with a patio and swimming pool. A carport holds two cars, and there is room for additional parking.

Taxes: $18,813 (estimated)

Lake Forest, Ill. | $1.35 Million

A 1916 former gardener’s cottage with three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms and a conservatory

Once part of the estate of Cyrus McCormick Jr., the son of the inventor who founded a company that evolved into International Harvester, this property has been enlarged with an addition to the original cottage and garage and with a conservatory that replaced the greenhouse. It is just east of Sheridan Road, near Lake Forest College. Downtown Chicago is about 30 miles south.

Size: 3,398 square feet

Price per square foot: $397

Indoors: One passes through gates that remain from the McCormick estate (along with the original, functioning lampposts) to approach this gabled brick-and-stucco house with timber trim. To the left of the foyer in the original section is a combined living-and-dining room with a brick fireplace. To the right is a kitchen with a tin ceiling, oak cabinets, a center island and a separate eating area and butler’s pantry.

French doors in the living room open to a 1980s sunroom and, beyond, a covered outdoor patio and a heated three-car garage with a work space. Upstairs, in the original cottage, are three bedrooms and a shared bathroom. A family room extends over the sunroom and patio, connecting to the upper floor of the garage, which has been reconfigured with a master suite that includes a bathroom, a dressing room and an office.

On the other side of the garage is a new, climate-controlled conservatory with a potting shed.

Outdoor space: The one-acre property has broad lawns, specimen trees and a playhouse.

Westerly, R.I. | $1.395 Million

A house with five bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms and water views

Designed by Charles Moore when he was dean of the Yale School of Architecture, the house is in a private gated community five minutes from the village of Watch Hill, R.I., and five minutes from the beach. It has been owned by the same family since it was completed in 1968 and has views of Long Island Sound and the Pawcatuck River.

Size: 4,995 square feet

Price per square foot: $279

Indoors: On a pavilion-like entry porch, a door custom-made with wood blocks and copper opens to a foyer with a tile floor. Up a few steps to the right is a living room that has a wood ceiling with exposed beams and a free-form stone fireplace built by Mr. Moore’s Yale students. A round, windowed bay is among the room’s seating areas.

Straight ahead from the entrance is a tiled dining area with a cathedral ceiling, a wet bar and sliding glass doors that open to a back patio. The large kitchen has paneled walls and ceiling, marble countertops, custom cabinets and a second fireplace. There is a nearby half bathroom and a rear staircase leading to an upstairs media room with a large windowed bay.

The main staircase rises to three uniquely shaped bedrooms that have access to a hallway bathroom, and a loft-style master suite overlooking the dining area. The master suite includes a bedroom with a work space and a private outdoor balcony; there are also two private bathrooms, one on the same level and the other up a small flight of steps.

Below the main level is a basement with a playroom, darkroom and storage area.

Outdoor space: A breezeway connects the main house to a two-car garage with an upstairs bonus room and a one-bedroom, ground-level guest apartment with its own back patio. The 4.24-acre wooded property includes a meandering driveway in front and more than an acre of lawn with fruit trees in the back.
