Google down! Chaos for workers as Hangouts, Drive and Gmail stop working

Google Hangouts, Doordash, Nest, Drive and Gmail were all affected. There were also reports that YouTube, the popular video sharing site owned by Google, had been experiencing technical difficulties.

The issue now appears to be fixed and Google services are working as usual.

Users attempting to access certain Google services were met with an error message saying: “The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.

“Please try again in 30 seconds. That’s all we know.”

According to Downdetector, a website which notes when services go offline, the majority of those reporting issues were in North America and east Asia.

There were also clusters of people reporting problems in South America, Australia and New Zealand.

According to technology site Gizmodo the trouble began at about 9pm EDT (2am BST).

Referring to Google services the site reports: “Some, such as Gmail, were taking significantly more time to load while other services like Google’s Play Store and Calendar seemed to be on an endless boot-up loop and wouldn’t load at all.”

Many Google customers took to social media to express their frustration.

Another Twitter user commented: “What else could go wrong. Gmail, Google Drive, all down.

“Looks like it’s down worldwide? Thanks 2020.”

One social media user from Portland, Oregon, asked Google to issue a statement explaining why some students would be unable to complete their work.

They tweeted: “Google you should probably make a statement for the poor students who can’t get into their classrooms or access their docs right now.

“Maybe offer a ‘Google ate my homework’ note or something.”

When contacted by the New York Times Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
